Groton Community Dinners

Fostering community by offering a healthy, delicious meal for all, free of charge, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere

Our dinners are hosted by various community groups whose aim is to foster caring and community in our area. Come for a free meal and meet your neighbors, or eat without cooking and if you are able, make a contribution.

Building Community

Groton Community Dinners began in May of 2009 as an effort to foster community by offering a healthy, delicious meal for all, free of charge, in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Our main goals are:

  • to provide a nutritious, delicious meal monthly / weekly
  • to create an opportunity for service to others
  • to enhance connections and other affiliations
  • to promote environmental sustainability and support local businesses and farms as much as possible.

We strive to include all community groups and individuals who wish to be a part of this effort. We firmly believe that, by working together on common goals, we can help heal our world.

See this page for some of the groups in and around Groton that have been involved in the planning and realization of this program.

Practicing Sustainability

Because we cannot build a sustainable community without examining and changing the choices we make every day, GCD has set an ambitious goal to cut as much waste as possible from every dinner.

We use reusable plates and utensils, tablecloths, napkins, and placemats — no disposable paper or plastic. We also decided to aim for correct portioning of servings, so you’ll be asked if you’d like an adult or child’s portion and if there are any elements to the meal that you would like left off your plate. If you do not finish your meal, we encourage you to take it with you. Ask your server for a takeout box (environmentally friendly, of course) in which you can place your remaining meal to take home with you.

If there is unserved food left over after the staff have been served, all leftovers will go to House of Hope, a women’s shelter located in Lowell, MA.
